Cheap Gear
There is no shortage of gear available - all to do the same thing: Record audio.  Unfortunately, digital equipment is being made cheaper (mostly in China with a label "Pro" on it) to help online and chain stores make a profit.  The result many times is poor quality or a mix that difficult to make work.

Dependable Quality
While many people aren't "gear heads" most know quality when they hear it.  The better "high end" equipment makes recording a project easier from tracking and mixing to mastering.  In the end, your project (if produced and recorded the same) should sound just as anything commercial out there.  Of course, much of that depends on how much time you are willing to spend with the engineer to get it there.
